Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure aimed at rejuvenating the appearance of upper or lower eyelids, or both to make the eyes look more rested and youthful. The procedure involves surgical reduction of excess skin and fat tissue, and in some cases, the underlying muscles may also be tightened.
Eyes are a highly delicate organ of the human body, which makes it all the more imperative that the procedure should be performed only by a specialist. Dr. Eric Yavrouian is a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon providing eyelid surgery and other face and neck procedures to patients in Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, CA, and surrounding communities.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty
Some of the specific goals that can be achieved with eyelid surgery include the following:
- It can remove the puffiness from the upper eyelids with surgical excision of fat deposits around the eyes. Upper eyelid surgery can achieve this goal.
- With lower eyelid surgery, it is possible to reduce the loose skin, folds, and wrinkles around the lower eyelids.
- Upper eyelid surgery can also correct the issues of vision limitation, which may occur when upper eyelid is droopy.
- Bags under the eyes can be removed.
- If the white beneath the iris is showing due to sagging lower eyelids, it can be corrected with lower blepharoplasty.
Who is a Suitable Candidate?
Individuals who are unhappy with the wrinkled, tired, or angry appearance of the eyes may benefit from eyelid cosmetic surgery. A marvelous candidate will have healthy facial muscle and tissue to achieve the best results with this procedure. As a dedicated facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Yavrouian will assess a patient’s overall health condition, previous eye surgeries if any, facial anatomy and their personal aesthetic goals before determining the most appropriate eyelid surgery.
The ideal patient will be a non-smoker or ready to quit smoking several weeks prior to the surgery. Candidates with a positive outlook and realistic expectations will usually achieve greater satisfaction from the procedure. If the patient suffers from a serious eye ailment, the surgeon may not recommend aesthetic surgery for the eyelids. Dr. Yavrouian receives patients from Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, CA, and nearby areas for blepharoplasty and other procedures.
Surgical Procedure
Blepharoplasty may be performed using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the situation. The surgeon will begin the procedure by placing incisions within the natural structures of the eyelid region to keep the scars inconspicuous. If the upper eyelids are saggy, the surgeon will redistribute the excess fat, remove loose skin and tighten the underlying muscles if necessary.
Wrinkled and tired looking appearance of the lower eyelid can be corrected with an incision placed just below the lower lash line. Through the incision, the surgeon will remove loose skin and excess fat. If muscle tightening is not involved, the surgeon may use the transconjuctival incision to perform the procedure.
Recovery
Most patients will be able to resume their regular activities or go to work within a week to 10 days. Full results will appear over several weeks as the swelling subsides.
