Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that removes sagging skin or excess fat from the eyelids. This procedure can be done on only the upper lids, only the lower lids, or on both the upper and lower eyelids at the same time. During your consultation, your surgeon will inform you of your expected recovery time with upper and lower eyelid surgery. Board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Eric Yavrouian provides upper and lower eyelid surgery to patients in Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, Greater Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, CA, and surrounding communities.
Recovery Time
Following eyelid surgery, you may experience sensitivity to light, blurry or double vision, puffiness and numbness, watering eyes, swelling and bruising, and some discomfort and pain. You will need someone to drive you home following your surgery, and it is recommended they stay with you throughout the night to assist you.
Patients should expect bruising, swelling, and scarring at the incision site for several weeks following surgery. You may resume work within the first week or two following your procedure, depending on your comfort level. Bruising will persist for about 2 to 3 weeks, while swelling may take over 2 months to subside. Scars may take a year or more to heal and begin improving.
Improving Your Recovery
You may help ensure a smooth and speedy recovery by:
- Taking time off work to allow yourself to rest and properly recover
- Stocking up your fridge and preparing your bedside before your procedure
- Follow your post-op instructions from your surgeon. You may need to use ointments or ice compressions to help your recovery.
- Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and wind during recovery
- Get adequate sleep to help the body heal
